In the southern states, there were two types of cotton.
Long Staple Cotton
Could only grow along the coastline
Easy to grow and harvest.
Most plantations could not grow this because in did not grow inland
Short Staple Cotton
Grew inland
Sticky fibers were hard to separate from the plant
So hard to farm that inland plantations could not grow it for a profit
